Henry’s House brings relief to North Carolina caregivers, support to youth

BURGAW, N.C. (WECT) – A new facility designed to give caregivers a temporary break while supporting youth with complex needs opened in Burgaw Thursday after years of planning.

Katie Knight, program director for Henry’s House, said the around-the-clock nature of caregiving leaves little room for parents to catch their breath.

“There’s not a break. You know, there is a go to work, make dinner, make the bed, and do all the things,” Knight said. “We really want to offer families just a time to relax and be still.”

Henry’s House, located at 314 Progress Drive in Burgaw, offers care for children and young adults ages 6 to 21 diagnosed with developmental disabilities and other complex needs.

Elizabeth DeBiasi, a board member with Easterseals PORT Health who has raised a child with special needs, said the facility provides a lifeline for families who rarely get the opportunity to step back and recharge.

“It’s a journey, and having support as a caregiver is absolutely fundamental,” DeBiasi said.

The facility features six single-occupancy rooms and offers recreational and skill-building activities tailored to each person’s interests and abilities. Depending on availability, participants may also bring their siblings.

Luanne Welch, CEO of Easterseals PORT Health, said Henry’s House is more than a facility.

“Henry’s House is not just another facility. It’s not just another respite facility for kids with disabilities to take a much-needed respite and recharge. It’s a place where kids matter,” Welch said.

Henry’s House is made possible by Easterseals PORT Health and by funding from Trillium Health Resources.
